Beida (Arabic: البيضاء, al-Bayda ʾ, "the White", in dialect Zawiyat el-Beda, in Italian, during the Fascist era, Bede Littoria) is a city of Libya northern region of Cyrenaica, capital of the Municipality of Al Jabal Akhdar.

The city is located on the plateau of Jebel Akhdar, about 600 meters above sea level, 30 km from the Mediterranean Sea. At about 11 km to the east, lie the ruins of the ancient Greek colony of Cyrene.

The area economy is primarily agricultural, based on cereal crops, vineyards and fruit, other fruit trees.

The first settlement dates back to the site in the first millennium BC when it was founded a Greek colony, later known in Roman times, as the Balagrae. Ancient city, you can still see the ruins of Odeon, and a complex of three shrines - the largest of which dedicated to Aesculapius - built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138), and also mentioned by Pausanias in " Periegesis of Greece 2.26.7 [1].

At the time of the Italian occupation in 1933, there was a colony founded as a rural village Littoria Bede. During the Second World War Littoria Bede became the headquarters of the German Afrika Panzergruppe commanded by Erwin Rommel.

However the move never took full effect and the project to move the capital from Tripoli to Al Bayda was abandoned.
